Hundreds of Democrats have urged President Biden to ban assault-style firearms following a shooting at a Kings Soopers grocery store last week. The push comes from a group of over 100 Democratic senators and House representatives urging Biden in a letter to reform gun laws.

Reps. Mike Thompson, D-Calif., Joe Neguse, D-Co., Val Demings, D-Fla., and Ed Perlmutter, D-Co., wrote, "For too long, gun manufacturers, in order to circumvent the National Firearms Act, have designed and marketed concealable AR-15 style firearms which fire rifle rounds...Concealable assault-style firearms that fire rifle rounds pose an unreasonable threat to our communities and should be fully regulated under the National Firearms Act consistent with the intent and history of the law," according to The Hill.

Firearms such as the semi-automatic Ruger AR-556, purchased by the gunman in the Boulder shooting, require a background check. The gunman, Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa, who purchased the gun legally at a gun store, would have been required to register with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. He would have also been required to provide photo identification and fingerprints.
