They Can't Do Anything Right: Two More Broward Sheriff's Deputies Fired For Neglect Over Parkland Shooting

It’s the sheriff’s department that just can’t do anything right. I would say this would be an embarrassment, but we’ve long past that; it’s been embarrassing for months. The Broward County Sheriff’s Office has fired two more deputies for neglect during the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida that left 17 people dead. It sparked yet another wave of anti-gun activism. The school resource officer that was the initial lightening rod, Scot Peterson, resigned, though faced intense scrutiny for pretty much not confronting shooter Nikolas Cruz as he committed this senseless act of violence. For his part in this debacle, he was recently brought up on child neglect and perjury charges (via WSJ):

Two more Broward County Sheriff’s deputies have been fired following an internal investigation into the agency’s handling of the massacre at a Parkland, Fla., high school last year, officials said.

Two additional deputies were fired this week, Broward County Sheriff Gregory Tony said Wednesday. The remaining three officers will return to their regular duties.

“One of the things that we were able to examine and look at as a command staff was the performance aspects of the deputies that were out there that day,” Mr. Tony said at a news conference. “As we conclude this final chapter for this organization…we are now going to continue to move forward with fixing the issues that exist in the agency as related to training.”
