Gun-rights group sues Kent State over fees for upcoming event

Kent State University paid $65,000 in September for security at a gun-rights walk organized by a graduate and others.

Now, a student group connected to the walk organizers is planning an indoor event titled “Let’s Talk Gun Rights” on campus Nov. 19, and says the university should again pick up the tab for security.

The student group — Liberty Hangout — has asked a federal judge to stop university officials from requiring the student group to pay an estimated nearly $1,800 fee for eight police officers and six “hall security personnel.”

The speaker for the event, planned for the KSU student center, is Kaitlin Bennett, a main organizer of the Sept. 29 gun-rights/open carry walk.

Bennett founded the KSU student chapter of Liberty Hangout, which bills itself as a libertarian group, before she graduated in May.
