An illegal deer hunter who was singled out for his behavior as part of a family of poachers has to watch a 1940s-era Disney film as part of his sentence.

David Berry Jr., of Brookline, was part of years of investigation by Missouri Department of Conservation agentsafter a tip to the state’s Operation Game Thief Hotline. Along with three further members of his family and other suspects, Berry was part of a group suspected of taking “several hundred deer” since 2016.

“Conservation investigators estimated that the group was responsible for killing hundreds of deer over a three-year period,” he said. “The deer were trophy bucks taken illegally, mostly at night, for their heads, leaving the bodies of the deer to waste.”

Besides a 120-day sentence Berry received in Barton County Circuit Court and a one-year sentence he picked up in Lawrence County for offenses there, the Springfield News-Leader reports that he was “to view the Walt Disney movie Bambi, with the first viewing being on or before December 23, 2018, and at least one such viewing each month thereafter, during Defendant’s incarceration in the Lawrence County Jail.”
