People in Alabama can participate in concealed carry without background checks or permits starting next year, according to a new law.
Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey signed House Bill 272 into law on Thursday, removing the state's concealed carry permit requirement and becoming the 22nd state to remove such a firearms policy.
"Unlike states who are doing everything in their power to make it harder for law-abiding citizens, Alabama is reaffirming our commitment to defending our Second Amendment rights,” Ivey said in a statement.
In addition, the legislation revises what is defined as a shotgun, removes restrictions on carrying a bowie knife or concealed knife, and prohibits the "knowing touching of a firearm" during an investigative stop by law enforcement.
The Alabama Sheriffs Association was among opponents of the bill, arguing it would make it easier for people to buy guns and not register them.
