Gun-rights advocates in Iowa have cause for celebration tonight. Voters have officially approved Amendment 1 by a margin of 65.5 percent to 34.5 percent, according to the Associated Press.
The measure will add language to the Iowa state constitution guaranteeing an individual right to keep and bear arms. It also imposes a heightened standard of review for judges faced with challenges to gun-control measures.
“The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. The sovereign state of Iowa affirms and recognizes this right to be a fundamental individual right. Any and all restrictions of this right shall be subject to strict scrutiny,” the added language reads.
